THUNDER 2-4-0
THUNDER -
MHD VS. Salem -
L
5-3.. Nov 5th
In their first game of the season team
Thunder matched up nicely with Salem. It was a
even match in the 1st half with both teams showing an
ability to attack and defend. Eliza Q. did a great job
in goal in the first half. The half closed at 1-1
In the second half Marblehead's defense
was caught out of position and paid the price.
With 10 minutes left Marblehead found it's self down 5
-1, however team thunder showed their never give up
attitude. Thunder was robbed by so questionable
calls and a goal was called off by the ref... not to be
deterred, team Thunder would bring the score to 3-5 with
3 minutes left. Thunder continued it's pressure
and in the last second a foul by Salem in the box was
ignored and no penalty kick was allowed. Salem went
undefeated last year and have played as a team for over
a year. This is a good indication of good things
to come for team Thunder. Jessica P, Lily E. and Hannah
C. were in goal in the 2nd half and did a great job.
This years team members are Katie A.,
Hannah C., Casey C., Sarah C., Lily E. Grace H., Hana
L., Kelly M., Sammy M., Jessica P., Sarah P., Eliza Q.
and Abigail S.
THUNDER - vs.
Beverly... L 6-1
12-Nov-2008
The Thunder lost their 2nd game of
the season, 6 to 1, against a strong Beverly squad.
With brave goaltending from Sammy M.,
Marblehead held Beverly to just one goal through
much of the first half, thanks to strong
defense from the likes of Kelly M. and Hana L. The
Thunder's Katie A. tied the game at 1, punching in a
rebound following a string of good passes started by
Grace H. out of the defensive end up to Sara P. on
the wing, who outhustled her defender to get the
ball in front of the goal. Beverly's steady
pressure led to two more goals late in the half,
though the Thunder controlled the ball well at
times, including fine efforts from Lily E. and
Jessie P. After outstanding first half play in the
field, the Thunder's Eliza Q. took over goalkeeping
in the second half and turned many shots away with
both her hands and feet. Beverly kept up pressure
in the second half, netting 3 more goals, but not
before being slowed by aggressive defense from Abi
S. and Sarah C. The Thunder's quickness and ball
skills, such as from Hannah C. and Casey C., led to
several second half goal-scoring chances, but none
were able to get through. The Thunder hope to
rebound from this loss in their game next week
against the Aztec White club team.
THUNDER - vs.
Aztec White...
W
6-2 - 11/19/08
The Thunder gained their first win of the season with a
6-2 triumph against a competitive Aztec White team.
The Thunder scored first, when Hannah C alertly picked
up a loose ball near the Aztec goal and found the net
with a well-placed kick. After the Aztecs evened the
score, the Thunder regained the lead when Sarah P scored
from a crowd of players near the front of the goal. Abi
S put the Thunder ahead 3-1, after taking an impressive
long-range pass from Grace H. The Aztecs kept it
close with a shot that just barely eluded Thunder goalie
Hana L, whose strong goaltending during the first half
helped the Thunder to maintain their lead. The second
half was all Thunder, starting with Katie A's perfectly
placed free kick directly over the goalie's head and
into the net. Eliza Q scored after taking a fine pass
from Hannah C, and Casey C completed the Thunder assault
with a goal assisted by Kelly M and Jessie P.
Second-half goalie Abi S skillfully turned away each
shot she faced. Sarah C, Lily E and Sammy M turned in
outstanding performances on both offense and defense
throughout the game. With each of their goals scored by
a different player, the Thunder demonstrated a
well-balanced team effort that they hope to continue
throughout the season.
Thunder vs.
Lynnfield,
L 2-6 11/26/08
The Thunder lost, 6 to 2, to a
balanced & deep Lynnfield team on the eve of the
Thanksgiving holiday break. Inspired by several
family holiday guests, the Thunder staged a
second half surge thanks to terrific goalkeeping
from Abi S. and several well-earned scoring
chances while holding their opponent scoreless
over the last 20 minutes of play. A convincing
goal by Eliza Q. on a through ball from Jessie
Pearce pulled the Thunder close midway through
the second half, but they were not able to
capitalize on other chances. Despite athletic
goalkeeping from Lily E. and solid defense from
Sammy M. and Casey C. in the first half, the
Lynnfield squad was able to build a sizeable
lead at halftime. The Thunder netted their
first goal of the game on a strong 50/50 tackle
and right-footed blast from Abi S.. Several
times the Thunder advanced the ball well without
a goal to show for it, including one fine
sequence where the right defender Katie A.
cleared a ball nicely across the field to her
left defender Hannah C., who dribbled and fed a
pass up to her left wing Heather P., who quickly
fired a left-footed shot, the rebound of which
was alertly shot back by Sarah C. before being
saved by Lynnfield's goalie. Likewise, the
Thunder's defense showed flashes of skill,
speed, and anticipation, particularly Sarah
P.and Eliza Q., but in the end they fell short
to a good Lynnfield team. The Thunder take on
rival Swampscott on December 3rd.
Thunder came up
short against a strong Swampscott team
by a score of 7-3. 12/3/08
The Marblehead Thunder came up short against a
strong Swampscott team
by a score of 7-3. After spotting Swampscott three
early unanswered
goals, the Thunder roared back with a perfectly
placed goal by Lily
E., playing a rebound off the boards. Both teams
continued to
play aggressively throughout the first half, with
Jessie P.
turning in a fine performance in goal, and Sammy M.,
Casey
C. and Kelly M. showing great defensive skills.
The
Thunder's offense produced several good scoring
chances, notably due
to strong efforts around the goal by Hannah C. and
Casey C.,
but the first half ended with another Swampscott
goal and the Thunder
behind by 4-1. The Thunder seemed poised for a
comeback early in
the second half, at one stretch controlling the play
with a furious
series of assaults on the opposing goal, with Lily
E., Abi S.,
Sarah C., Grace H. and Sarah P. among those
contributing
to the sustained offensive charge. But the Thunder
teammates were
frustrated by several near-misses. After Swampscott
produced another
score, Katie A. took a perfect pass from Jessie P.
and scored
the Thunder's third goal, and again the momentum
seemed to shift in
the Thunder's direction, with the Marblehead team
keeping the
pressure on the Swamspcott defense. After
Swampscott answered with a
score of their own, the Thunder's Heather P. capped
a
hard-fought offensive drive by scoring late in the
half, with an
assist from Hana L.. Swampscott added one last
goal shortly
before the final buzzer. The commanding presence of
Eliza Q. in
goal for the Thunder kept the second-half scoring
close, with a
series of excellent saves combined with skillful
maneuvering of the
ball outside of the Thunder's goal area.
Thunder dominates
over the Hamilton-Wenham Lions
Team Thunder came away with an impressive win over
the Hamilton-Wenham Lions in an early afternoon
game. They gained a very quick lead on goals belted
by Eliza Q. and Hannah C. Great passing and
footwork baffled the Lions and Lilly E. was able to
settle a pass from Heather Purchase and boot it in
goal keeping the Thunder ahead. With outstanding
goal tending by Grace H. and strong defensive plays
by Kelly M. and Sammy M. the Lions came up short in
the first half. Katie A. was able to hold the Lions
from scoring in the second half with her terrific
saves in goal. Sarah P., Abby S., and Hannah C.
were able to keep the Lions back with their strong
defensive footwork. The offense continued to
dominate with skillful passes by Hana L., Lilly E.
and Kelly M.. With great teamwork and effort by
everyone Thunder was able to come away with a 5-3
victory.
THUNDER vs.
Aztec Red...
Wed...
Dec 17th...
L
Wednesday
night's battle with Aztec Red proved to be a real
tester. From the outset, the Aztec team put heavy
pressure on Marblehead goalie Grace H., who made
several nice saves. Aztec rang up several early
goals before Marblehead steadied itself and forwards
Sarah C., Abbie S. and Katie A. put some good
pressure on the Aztec defense.
Eliza Q. took over in goal for Marblehead during the
1st half and played brilliantly under very heavy
Aztec pressure. The second half resulted in no
additional scoring for either side with Casey C.
playing a strong role in goal.
Sarah P., Hannah C. and Lilly E. all gave big
efforts, however, the Aztecs proved to be as good as
advertised.
